All three were taken to various hospitals — with the suspect in custody — as the building was placed on lockdown following the chaos that erupted around 1 p.m.
“It is with a very heavy heart — one of our officers has succumbed to their injuries,” Pittman announced at a news conference.
Pittman said she couldn’t yet identify the slain cop.
The fatal attack is not considered to have been an act of terror and there “does not appear to be an ongoing threat,” acting Washington, DC, Metropolitan Police Chief Robert Contee said.
The suspect didn’t appear to have been targeting any lawmakers, Pittman said, and he doesn’t appear to be anyone with whom cops are familiar, Contee said.
Pittman said that “one of our officers has succumbed to their injuries and she couldn’t yet identify the slain cop.
The incident took place at a vehicle checkpoint on the north side of the Capitol along Constitution Avenue in Washington DC, police said.
Sources told NBC News that the driver got out of the car with a knife after hitting the officers, then was shot.
There were unconfirmed initial reports of a shooting.
The incident took place amid heavy security put in place following the deadly Capitol riot on Jan. 6.
